We are capable of learning lessons from each of life’s moments.  As a country, as a community, as a family, as individuals, we can step back and ask questions that help clarify, elucidate and allow for positive movement.  I think we are collectively in a powerfully influential moment that gives us possibility of learning and growing.

It is a known caveat that connection and collaboration are vital principals for engagement, that respect for differences demonstrate human caring, that sensitivity and compassion direct us toward honesty and truthfulness.  As adults we serve as role models for our youth.  They look to us, they listen to us, they watch us.  We work hard to make sure that we have communities that are safe, where differences are acknowledged and respected.  It is through awareness that we can dig deep which directs us to change and growth.

This is not about political differences, it is about how we conduct ourselves,  the steps we take to insure fairness, grounded actions, and responsible civic considerations.  There is an old adage, “United we stand, divided we fall”.  I use this line in my clinical work with parents, in my consulting work, in my research.  We will never all agree on everything, but it is imperative that we agree to adhering to respect, caring, compassion, and acceptance of differences.

May we learn lessons at this moment and carry them forward to our youth and communities.  We can be stronger by doing so.
