Alexander DeFelice, LMHC
Alex is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who specializes in the treatment of people struggling with anxiety and mood disorders, adjustment disorders, interpersonal challenges, and other life stressors. Alex strives to create a safe and supportive environment where trust, respect, and commitment to high quality clinical work mark the work between the client and therapist. Alex believes that being honest, nonjudgmental, validating, and empowering are all key to a healthy and effective therapeutic relationship.
Background & Qualifications
Alex is certified in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) so he frequently incorporates various CBT techniques and philosophies into his therapeutic approach. For example, Alex believes that there is a connection among our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. By examining and challenging these areas both inside and outside of sessions, Alex helps clients achieve positive change, relief from symptoms, and personal growth.
Like any effective clinician, Alex does not solely subscribe to one single theoretical orientation. Instead, he takes an individualized approach with his clients and tailors the clinical work on the presenting problem(s), the identities, and the lived experiences of each unique individual. Other modalities that Alex integrates into his work include Strengths-Based, Solution-Focused Therapy; Motivational Interviewing (MI); and Mindfulness.
Alex earned his Master of Science degree in Counseling Psychology from Northeastern University. He extended his learning by completing the Cognitive and Behavioral Treatment Certification Program at Boston University. Prior to these he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Western New England University. Before joining the staff at the Center, Alex worked as a staff clinician and case manager for a small private liberal arts college, as well as an emergency services clinician for a mobile crisis team. These professional experiences, combined with his personal values, solidified Alex’s dedication to the de-stigmatization of mental health and the promotion of healthy masculinity.
Alex is committed to self-care for both his clients and himself. Alex enjoys cooking and hiking and finds both relaxation and healing at the beach and in the ocean.
